This site, in addition to being dedicated to the men of HMCS Saint John, and the crews of U-247 and U-309, is also dedicated to my father Doug.

Civilian Career
Doug lived on Brunswick, St. Patrick and Prince Edward Streets in the East End. He attended Aberdeen and Centennial schools and played football in grade 8. He worked at a variety of labour jobs both before and after his military service. He worked for Gandy & Allison, Fowler's Construction, Fraser & Brace Ltd. (at Labrador), Modern Construction and Stephen's Construction Ltd.

In 1964 be became a casual employee of the Water Department of the City of Saint John. He became a permanent employee on April 6, 1970 and worked as a pipe layer with that department until his last day of work on May 18, 1988. He retired on disability on April 24, 1989.

Doug played darts, and for many years was a member of the 3rd Field Gunners team. He was a member of the Korean War Veterans Association, the Jervis Bay Legion #53, the Retired Employees Association of the City of Saint John, CUPE 18, and the Merchant Navy Veterans Association. Doug was formerly a member of the Main Brace Naval Veterans Association.

Military Career
After 4½ years with the Stone Church Army Cadets, Doug joined the 2nd Battalion, Saint John Fusiliers (MG) Reserve Force on March 11, 1942. He was Honourably Discharged on March 1, 1943 so he could join the Merchant Navy. He served as a fireman aboard the merchant ship Michael Livanos until she was torpedoed by U-178 and sunk on July 4, 1943.

After trying to enlist in the army, Doug joined the ship Anna T on December 2, 1944 and sailed with her until January 1945. He stayed with the merchant marine until 1948.

On January 18, 1952 Doug joined the 3rd Battalion, Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry for service in Korea. Private Wright arrived in Korea on October 29, 1952 and was promoted to Corporal on May 1, 1953. Corporal Wright served as a stretcher bearer and he remained in Korea until July 12, 1953.

Corporal Wright transferred to the 2nd Battalion, Canadian Guards at Camp Petewawa until his Honourable Discharge on March 17, 1955.
